I finally sat down and binged Marvel’s Netflix Original series Defenders. For only watching a bit of Daredevil and Luke Cage, I found the main story line easy enough to follow. I really need to watch Jessica Jones…and I guess Iron Fist. The gist of it is, the secret organization called the Hand is out to get Iron Fist, and the other three — Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Daredevil — become entwined in the fight for various reasons. The Hand thinks the Iron Fist can help them live forever. There’s a bunch of fights throughout the series and it ends in a massive fight.
The characters had decent chemistry together and there were some lighthearted and amusing moments that I had hoped for, but I felt it could have been so much stronger. Never having watched Iron Fist, but hearing my friends and fellow podcasters complain about that character, I knew not to expect big things from him. He was definitely the weakest character, though I have to give credit for his good chemistry with Luke Cage. One thing I really loved was seeing Jessica Jones and Daredevil play off of one another.
Let’s talk about the villains. They felt a little weak, writing-wise and I never really feared them. Plus their whole end game of what they wanted the Iron Fist to help them obtain was, to paraphrase a friend of mine, kind of stupid. I’m sure there could have been a way to make the Hand more sinister without changing them too much.
Overall, the show was enjoyable for the chemistry between the characters and the action scenes. If you enjoy superhero movies and TV shows, you’ll want to check it out. It’s definitely not the best superhero media out there, but it’s also not the worst.
